In November, 1997, the NB TeleEducation list had 25 entries. By May, 1998, there were 42. The list grows, but the ideas do not. Of these 42, there were 29 corporate, 12 academic, and 1 freeware entry.

There are now few major academic publishers left in the United States:perhaps only the Pearson Group, Harcourt-Brace, Houghton Mifflin, McGraw-Hill, and International Thomson Publishing, depending on your definition of "major". These are all planning or buying course management systems with the intention of using a content-based economic model.

CBT is entering the academic market and vice versa. We might close with a quote from Macromedia, to illustrate some cultural differences:

"While instructor-led training depends upon the rare charisma of a dynamic teacher, CBT can capture this rare talent and replicate it infinitely at no marginal cost. "
