Web-based Instruction - Annotations

Studies and Trends in Web-based Instruction../Library/link%20to%20presentation%20pages

This section looks at some statistical surveys of Web-based instruction. I had hoped to find newer material, but everything is from las Fall, which is a long time ago in terms of the Internet.

The picture I get is that support is not following intentions. The consequences of this are hard to predict. One possibility is that universities will increasingly look to turn-key solutions and the competition will drive down the prices of such solutions. Or it could lead to another demand on faculty time without real compensation.

One clear problem is the phenomenon of adding on new layers rather than replacing old. Web-based pedagogy should be integrated into our teaching practices, not added on. (I agree with Educom's analysis of "bolt-on technology".)

An interesting source of data will be the flashlight project. Here is a quote from an email in response to my request for data:

Flashlight has developed, and is developing, evaluation tool kits for studying the educational consequences of using computers, video and telecommunications, on-campus and off-. We aren't doing the studies ourselves; instead we help others to do so through tool kits, training and so on. I think our web site <http://www.tltgroup.org> would be a valuable resource for you to cite especially because in the coming months we will be posting studies that others have done in your area.
